HONOLULU (HawaiiNewsNow) – Four people are dead, and another two were wounded following an apparent shooting overnight at a family gathering in Waianae, according to Honolulu police officials.
HPD says four people, including the suspect, have died, and two remain hospitalized.
All are believed to be adults, three women and one man.
The shooting, which was reported around 11:15 p.m. Saturday is the latest in a string of violent crimes along the Waianae Coast that prompted an increased police presence in the area.
Honolulu police held a press conference on Sunday to discuss the incident.
“There have been several incidents in the previous months and weeks, but this incident is not related to those. This incident happened as a result of neighbors. So I want to reassure the public that this is not a random act, but a targeted one,” HPD Chief Joe Logan said in the press conference.
Police officials say they received multiple calls from Waianae residents that evening who said their neighbor was operating a front loader and using it to ram multiple cars into the home along Waianae Valley Road.
Officials say multiple victims tried to flee when the 58-year-old male suspect opened fire, striking the victims.
HPD said at some point, a 42-year-old male resident of the home fatally shot the suspect with a handgun.
Upon arrival, HPD found that five people sustained gunshot wounds. Three of the five victims did not survive.
The victims include three women ages 34, 36, and 29. These three of the victims were reported dead at the scene.
The surviving victims are a 35-year-old man and a 52-year-old woman.
Officials said the other victims were rushed to a hospital after being shot multiple times.
The 42-year-old male resident who shot the suspect has been arrested for second-degree murder.
Police discovered that the front loader was carrying four 55-gallon drums containing an unknown fuel. Officials say some witnesses reported that they saw the suspect shoot rounds into those drums.
Officials say HFD hazmat is assisting with the removal of the drums.
HPD Lt. Deena Thoemmes said police responded to a previous incident involving a disagreement between the neighbors in 2023.
The investigation is ongoing.
