Highly Commended in the Natural Artistry category
A photo taken on a smart phone has been commended in the Wildlife Photographer of the Year competition for the first time.
Randy Robbins’ photo of the frosted body of a deer on the forest floor is among the first images released from this year’s competition on Thursday by the Natural History Museum.
Mr Robbins traditionally shoots on camera, but snapped the image of the deer on his phone before the ice could melt after he came across it near his home near Susanville, California, USA.
This year’s competition attracted a record-breaking 59,228 entries from photographers of all ages and experience levels from 117 countries and territories.
The images released have been given highly commended awards in their categories by judges, while the winners will be chosen from a separate pool of photographs.
The winners will be unveiled at a ceremony hosted by TV presenters Chris Packham and Megan McCubbin on October 8.
