A woman selling sex on the forbidding streets of Los Angeles’ red light district recalled one of the most memorable experiences.

Sex worker Mariah told the Soft White Underbelly podcast how on one occasion a bloke paid her $1,000 (Just under £800) for her “company,” but sadly she never saw him again.

“There was one guy who actually paid a thousand dollars just for my company… but he said that something happened to his d*** afterwards. I don’t know what exactly, he just said it wasn’t working for him – his dick wasn’t working,” she explained.

Mariah works mainly on the notorious Figueroa Street in South Los Angeles. Hundreds of women can be found at almost any hour of day or night working in an area centred around a dozen or so cheap motels.

Local police sources have complained that they are unable to control the blatant prostitution in the area since Governor Gavin Newsom passed his “Safer Streets For All Act” in January last year. The new legislation decriminalised loitering with the intent to work as a prostitute.

One local told the New York Post: “Before, this type of activity only happened at night where most citizens wouldn’t see it, but now it’s 24/7.”

“Now you can drive by at 2pm and see it,” they added. “Families drive by and see 10 girls on the corner, condoms on the ground.

“You go by the alleys and you see a guy in the middle of the alley and a woman performing [fellatio]. And a mom and her kids have to pass by that. It’s ridiculous, all in the open broad daylight. God only knows the impact it has on those kids who have to see this.”

Mariah herself admits she can feel “uncomfortable” in the dangerous region. “I feel like my life’s at risk sometimes,” she explained. “I just don’t know where it’s going to take me I don’t know what’s going to happen next.”

Her story, like so many others told by women working on Figueroa, is a sad tale of parental neglect and early abuse. She told how she was first “picked up” by a kerb crawler at the age of 16, before she had even considered getting into prostitution, but was then tempted by the easy money she was getting.

But she would never advise any woman to get involved in sex work.

“If it was my little sister I wouldn’t want her out here,” she tearfully explained. “I would tell her to know her worth – to know that her body is a temple.”

If she had her time again, she would never have started in sex work. She concluded: “I well I feel it’s it’s because of men hurting me. The more men hurt me, the more I say I can’t get into a relationship. It draws me further from wanting to find love.”
